It Looked Easy
This one started with confidence.
I opened a Sudoku puzzle, took one look at the grid, and thought, “Okay, this is going to be easy.”
There were plenty of numbers already filled in. Nothing looked intimidating. It seemed like one of those quick, straightforward games I could finish without much effort.
I was already expecting a smooth experience.
A Strong Start
And at first, I was right.
I filled in several numbers quickly. Rows and columns made sense, patterns were clear, and everything was moving at a nice pace.
I didn’t feel stuck at all.
In fact, I felt a little too comfortable.
The First Pause
Then I hit a small pause.
Not a big one—just a moment where nothing obvious stood out. Normally, I’d take a breath, scan the grid again, and continue.
But this time, I did something different.
I started overthinking.
Turning Simple Into Complicated
Instead of looking for the next obvious move, I began analyzing everything.
“What if this number goes here?”
“But then what happens in that column?”
“Wait, could there be another possibility?”
I started creating problems that didn’t actually exist.
The puzzle hadn’t become harder—I had just made it more complicated in my head.
Getting Stuck for No Reason
What made it worse was that I wasn’t even progressing.
I was thinking more, but solving less.
I kept jumping between sections, questioning moves that were actually correct, and hesitating over decisions that should’ve been simple.
It felt like I had lost my rhythm completely.
Realizing What I Was Doing
At some point, I stopped and just stared at the grid.
And then it hit me.
“This isn’t hard… I’m just overthinking it.”
That realization was both frustrating and a bit funny.
Resetting My Approach
So I did something simple.
I went back to basics.
Instead of trying to solve everything at once, I focused on the obvious again. One row, one column, one small step at a time.
No “what if” scenarios. No unnecessary analysis.
Just clear, simple logic.
Suddenly… It Was Easy Again
And just like that, things started moving again.
Numbers that I had ignored before suddenly stood out. Sections that felt confusing became clear.
Within a few minutes, I had more progress than I did during all that overthinking.
Finishing the Puzzle
I completed the puzzle without much trouble after that.
And when I finished, I couldn’t help but laugh a little.
It had been easy all along.
I had just made it difficult for myself.
Why This Happens
I think this happens more often than we realize.
Sometimes, when something feels too easy, we assume there must be more to it. So we dig deeper, analyze more, and end up complicating things unnecessarily.
Instead of trusting the process, we try to outthink it.
A Simple Reminder
That puzzle gave me a good reminder:
Not every problem needs a complex solution.
Sometimes, the simplest approach is the right one.
Final Thoughts
That experience with Sudoku taught me to trust the basics more.
To not overthink when things are already working.
